Anchor handling tugs are the vessels of offshore fleet. They are divided into 2 types:

  1. Anchor handling tug (AHT). Such vessel does not have a supply capability. As long as anchor handling tugs could not carry cargo, they are less attractive for charterers. Due to a small size these vessels are in demand for certain works with space restrictions.
  2. Anchor handling tug supply (AHTS). Such vessel has supply function and could supply drilling rigs and other offshore vessels. Equipment and cargoes are placed on deck. The oil, fresh water, drilling mud are transported in cargo tanks. Deck crane allows the AHTS to effect cargo handling

The main functions of the anchor handling tug supply are:

  1. towing of rigs from one location to another;
  2. anchor handling, which is setting and recovery of drilling rig anchors.

The main characteristics of AHT/AHTS are capacity of main engines measured in kilowatts or brake horsepower and a bollard pull measured in tons. Both figures are related to each other. Each 100 BHP provide about 1,2 tons of bollard pull. For example, a bollard pull of a vessel of 10 000 BHP capacity will be at region 120 tons.
